Write a CV | Find a job in Finland – Finrepo (2)

Resume or Resume (Curriculum Vitae, from Latin for "curriculum vitae"; in Finnish, ansioluettelo). The CV is a marketing tool you can use to promote yourself and gives you the opportunity to 'sell' your skills and experience to a potential employer. The resume is a document that lists your work experience and education chronologically from most recent to earliest.

  • A good CV contains all relevant information for the application. The CV should be: clear, consistent, informative, clearly structured and easy to read.
  • Remember that for each position you are applying for, your resume should be at least slightly tailored to ensure your success in the hiring process.
  • Certain things such as contact information, education, work experience and skills should always be included on your resume.

Creating and updating your resume or resume is definitely something you should invest in. A CV is usually the first document on the basis of which a recruiter or employer begins to form an image of a job seeker.

  4. education, training
  5. linguistic proficiency
  6. Software and computer skills

Personal and Contact Information

  • All personal and contact information should be prominently displayed and displayed clearly on your resume.
  • The top left corner of the document is a good place for a name and contact information, and a picture if you wish to include it (inserting a photo in a CV is optional in Finland).
  • Age and marital status are not required.
  • Don't forget to write down your name, email address, phone number and a link to your LinkedIn profile.
  • If you want to highlight your personality in a CV with photo, choose a representative, relevant, high-quality and smiling face photo.

Profile

A good resume begins with a few sentences or a paragraph that summarizes you, your skills, and your interests. In the profile description, it is also worth writing about your future career aspirations.

Work experience

  • Tell about your experiences in reverse chronological order, starting with your current or most recent job and working through past jobs. Therefore, you should list your most recent positions first. But in some cases, if it is particularly relevant to the position you are applying for, it is possible to include information about your previous position at the beginning of the CV as well.
  • For each internship period, your job title, your employer (company) and the time you worked there should be given.
  • Describe your role and tasks for which you were responsible as specifically as possible. You can also write about your successes.
  • If you have experience outside of work, such as hobbies or volunteer work, you can use the heading "experience" instead of "work experience" and write about other experiences that are useful for the task.

EXAMPLE

01.9.2015–30.4.2020
Deputy General Director
Firma X Oy, Helsinki
At my job, I was responsible for coordinating and planning day-to-day operations such as making phone calls, scheduling meetings, preparing reports, drafting contracts, recording data to maintain financial records, assisting with budget preparation and analysis, inventory maintenance and other ad -hoc tasks.

education, training

  • Include information about your degree, the date you graduated, and where you studied.
  • Tell about your education in order from most recent degree (or ongoing education) to oldest, or from most important (e.g. highest degree first) to least relevant. The order may depend on the particular position you are applying for, the most relevant training for that position may be listed first.
  • Write down the start and end dates of your studies, round up to the nearest month. If your studies are still ongoing, you can indicate the expected completion date.
  • Beside the educational information, include your degree title and the name of the educational institution.
  • Information on secondary education is irrelevant for the employer - unless you are still a young applicant for a holiday job.
  • It's also good to mention your major in the Education section or any major courses taken that may be relevant to the position you are applying for. It is worth mentioning if you have done a student exchange abroad as international experience is valued.

EXAMPLE

08/2008 – 04/2012 (evaluation)
Masters in Social Sciences
University of Helsinki
Major in Economics

linguistic proficiency

It is very important to be truthful about your language skills as they may be tested in an interview. If you wish, you can indicate oral and written language skills if there are differences between them.

There are many ways to mark language skills, you can choose one of them.

Variant 1: language levels

  • native speaker or native speaker
  • Excellent
  • Gut
  • Moderate
  • Elementary

Variant 2: language proficiency stars

  • Language skills can also be expressed visually, for example, with stars from one star to five, so that one star means elementary level and five means a mother tongue.

Variant 3: ILR Scale

Language skills can also be represented in the CV using the ILR scale (Interagency Language Roundtable scale), which is used by LinkedIn, for example:

  • 0 - No knowledge
  • 1 – basic knowledge
  • 2 – Limited ability to work
  • 3 – Professional work ability
  • 4 - Full professional qualification
  • 5 – Native speaker / bilingual skills

ILR Scale(Interagency Language Roundtable scale) - Standard rating scale for language proficiency in the United States.

Variant 4: GER or GER Scale

The scale known to many may also be the CEF, CEF or CEFRL scale (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), where language proficiency is labeled according to level as follows:

  • A1 - Beginner
  • A2 - Intermediate, Elementary
  • B1- Intermediate
  • B2 - Upper Intermediate
  • C1- Advanced effective operational competency
  • C2 - Competent

GER or GER Scale. You can read the definition of the different language levels on theEuropass page.

Software and computer skills

  • Good IT skills are essential in today's job market. Make a list of IT skills. Be specific when listing your computer skills. Write down which software applications, operating systems, web tools, programming languages, social media channels, hardware you are familiar with and how well you master them.
  • When you list IT skills, you need to focus more on the skills that are most in-demand for the position you are applying for. You need to highlight these skills on your resume.
  • The best way to demonstrate your IT skills to employers is by demonstrating the results you've achieved! You can do this through your past work or completed projects.

References and reviewers

  • Recruiters and hiring managers prefer to see information about references and their contact information on a resume, so this information should be included whenever possible. References are people who can attest to the skills and abilities you list on your resume. They are ready to support you in your job search. Interviewers will ask for their contact information and will call them to get more information about you. Recommendations may be obtained from previous managers, employees or employers.
  • However, always remember to ask your references for permission before giving their details to recruiters so that he or she is willing to tell the recruiter about you and your expertise. In addition to the name, it makes sense to indicate the phone number of the referee, place of work and job description.
  • References and references are usually added at the end of the resume.
  • You can also write in your CV that you provide references and references upon request.
  • If you wish, you can also add a short written recommendation that you received from your co-worker or manager in connection with your work as a quote.
  • Finnish law determines who the prospective employer (recruiter or hiring manager) can call. You may not, by law, contact anyone other than those designated by the applicant. The interviewer is therefore not allowed to call the former or current employer (referrer) without the job seeker's consent.Law on the Protection of Privacy in Working Life, Chapter 2, Section 4 (in English);Law on the Protection of Privacy in Working Life August 13, 2004/759, Chapter 2, Section 4 (in Finnish)
  • The law also mentions that if the interviewer receives information about a job seeker from an arbitrator that adversely affects the decision-making process, the interviewer must also discuss the matter with the job seeker before making a decision. The interviewer must ensure the accuracy of the information received. Find more in Finnish:Aalto Personnel Services Personnel Services

File format and instructions for submitting the resume

  • When your resume is ready, ask someone else to proofread it so there are no mistakes in the text.
  • Save and submit your CV as a PDF as it is universal and the document can be viewed and opened on virtually all devices.
  • Name your resume in a way that both you and the recipient can immediately see what it's about. The file name can be, for example, "Firstname-Lastname-CV".

Resume photo tips. Take a good photo for your resume

  • Including a picture on your resume isn't mandatory, but it can help your resume stand out in the recruiter's mind and make a positive first impression. A photo may be the first thing a recruiter will look for on your resume.
  • A good resume photo is current and relevant and can be shown to the employer, recruiter or hiring manager.
  • When choosing an image for your resume, make sure the image is relatively recent and gives a positive and professional impression of you and your personality. Don't use a distant photo of yourself, a party or wedding photo, a selfie taken in a mirror, or filters.
  • Choose a high-quality and representative image with the right lighting and a clear background. For example, the picture can be taken in front of a solid color wall or outdoors.
  • Choose clothes for the picture that you would normally wear at work, for example smart casual style.
  • You can take the most flattering pictures in natural light, e.g. B. outdoors or next to a window - but watch out for backlight!
  • A resume photo is traditionally a facial image, so take or crop a picture from the chest up.
  • Face the camera directly and smile, or face the camera in a way that feels natural to you.
