vonJames|16. May 2020|Find a job

Whether you are looking for part-time work or full-time employment, virtual job boards are the best place to start your job search.

Traditional media such as newspaper ads or postings on company career pages are losing popularity due to the lack of talent and the struggle to hire the best candidates.

It is crucial that your ad is seen everywhere, both for in-house recruiters and for specialist recruiting firms.

Here are the top 10 job portals in Germany (based on monthly traffic) from the statistics of the Crosswater Job Guide:

1. Indeed
2. StepStone
3. Employment agency
4. LinkedIn
5. meinestadt.de
6. jobrapido.de
7. Anthrax
8. Xing Job Market
9. Monster Germany
10. stellenanzeigen.de

We go into more detail on each of these sites below to give you a more focused strategy on where to look, how they differ from each other, and which ones work best for some of the specifics you might need.

If you are looking for specific tips on looking for a job in Berlin or Munich, then read the following articles.

The top 10 job portals in Germany (based on search traffic)

AccordinglyCrosswater Job Guide, there are over 1,200 active job exchanges in Germany. It's easy to get overwhelmed, not knowing where you're likely to get the most value from your search.

One thing you need to do BEFORE applying for a job in Germany is make sure this is the caseOptimize your resume and cover letteraccording to German format. If you haven't optimized your CV, your application will almost certainly end up in the trash.

The top 10 job exchanges and job portals in Germany (2)

1. Indeed

As a matter of facthas grown exponentially over the past 10 years and has developed into one of the most important job portals in Germany. When I wanted to change my employer in Germany in 2009, Indeed was barely on the radar. Now they get the most monthly search traffic in Germany.

Indeed's look and feel is pretty simple. Honestly, I prefer the UX on most competitor sites, but Indeed has some useful extra features as well.

Indeed has also created a very useful crowdsourced databaseEmployee ratings from their employers. If you're considering applying for a job even if it's not posted on Indeed, it's definitely worth checking out this feature just based on the sheer number of reviews here.

In addition to filtering by job title and location, you can also sort by relevance of the position (based on the keywords you searched for) and the date the position was posted. Unfortunately, there is no option to search for the language of the job advertisement.

You can also upload your CV and save it on the platform when you register to save on uploading each time you apply for a new job.

2. StepStone

Almost since searching for jobs on the internet became a thingStepStoneseems to have been the leader for job portals in Germany.

While Indeed may have surpassed them in monthly visitors, I suspect you'll end up spending more time on StepStone's site simply because the experience is a lot more enjoyable and there are some really nice features here.

It is the only top job search portal that allows you to filter out job listings in English without having to look at the niche search engines that scrape English language jobs from other portals and job boards on the internet.

In addition, it also has a fairly detailedsalary comparison tool,This will give you an idea of what the average salaries are for the positions you are interested in. If you take the personalized survey, you will receive an output that takes into account the location of the job, your relevant work experience and seniority of the job.

Otherwise the basicsSalary search by job titlegives you a lower and upper range.

Just like Indeed, you can register and upload your CV directly to the StepStone platform.

3. Employment agency

TheFederal Employment Agency(Federal Employment Agency) makes it into the top 3 with its own job database.

This is the outlier among the top 10 job portals in Germany: These are jobs that are actively advertised by the job center, based on companies that have informed you about their vacancies.

As a government agency, there is no active commercial model here. That is why you will find all conceivable jobs in the BfA search portal, from temporary work to top management.

The website and the portal itself have some features in English. You can navigate through theJOB MARKETin English. You can also search for vacancies by entering English job titles, which will be automatically translated into German. The search results will then also appear in German.

In order to be able to submit online applications via the platform, you must be registered in the system of the employment agency. Smaller companies that may not be able to afford to pay for job postings on the larger recruitment sites are the diamonds in the rough you are likely to find here.

LinkedIn

I already talked about this in our main article aboutHow to find English speaking jobs, as well as the individual articles for which I have compiledBerlinAndMünchen.

LinkedInis GOLD for job seekers. It's like your online resume and personal record of achievement. LinkedIn may not be as popular in Germany as it is in many other countries due to its domestic competitor Xing, but it still offers a large reach opportunityapprox. 9 million active usersin Germany.

Additionally, given Xing's presence and dominance to date in German-speaking Europe, I see this as a real benefit if you're an avid LinkedIn user. The published content is therefore usually much more English-language.

LinkedIn (perhaps not surprising given that the parent company is Microsoft) is a lot better than some competing sites when it comes to searching for relevant keywords in my opinion.

However, where LinkedIn really shines is in the ability to find recruiters and headhunters in the industry you're looking for a job in. If a few of them like your resume and experience, they will do your job for you. They put you in touch with recruiting managers, help introduce you to hiring companies, and generally act like a virtual assistant to your job search.

However, remember that this will only happen if you have commercial value to them...they are in for the commission!

5. meinestadt.de

This is the only one of the top 10 job sites in Germany (based on site traffic) that focuses primarily on non-graduate jobs. If your strategy is to get ANY job to study German intensively and you are focused on one specific place,Meinestadt.decould give you some unique opportunities that you won't find on the other sites.

It's also worth noting that Meinestadt isn't JUST a job portal (the hint is in the name), nor is it their primary focus. It's essentially a directory and portal for your environment. As such, they also offer property-for-rent sites, a dating portal, and cars for sale.

Think of it as a sort of Craigslist or Gumtree equivalent in German.

6. jobrapido.de

The jobs with the highest trafficsearch engine,Working speedis definitely worth a look, because it's not just a me-too version of the job boards listed higher up in the ranking.

What is the difference between a job exchange / a job market and a job search engine? Well, job boards are usually responsible for their own content. Hiring companies or agencies pay them to post jobs, or the various job boards syndicate each other's content.

Job search engines work a little differently. They search the Internet for job advertisements and therefore often offer different vacancies than the job boards. Their crawling technology is able to remove job advertisements from company websites. So if a hiring company doesn't post on one of the major job boards, you can discover some unique content on sites like this one.

7. Anthrax

Similar offer as above at Jobrapido,Milzbrandis also a job search engine and has a very similar feel and UX. These and Jobrapido are the only search engines among the top 10 job exchanges in Germany.

The top 10 job exchanges and job portals in Germany (16)

8. Xing Job Market

Xingis a native German competitor of LinkedIn and was only available in German until recently. I guess because they are under a lot of pressure from their big American competitor, also in the German speaking market, they recently upped their game. Not only do they have their website entirely in English and German, they have also made some significant improvements and invested heavily in their job search.

The result is that it gets over 2 million page views and easily makes the top 10.

9. Monster Germany

When I first moved to Germany, this was one of the main players. Since then,Monsterhas fallen from the lofty heights it once enjoyed and nowadays offers nothing special or unique. If you've used StepStone or Indeed, you probably won't have to search hard on Monster.

10. stellenanzeigen.de

Another one worth checking out, but again unlikely to offer an extremely unique offering over the main players. A cool feature withstellenanzeigen.de, but their option is to filter by popular companies. Great if you have a specific company in mind that you would like to work for.

BONUS SECTION

expert

Even though this is not among the top job portals in Germany based on traffic or job postings, it deserves a special mention as German job postings are typicaldo not include the expected salary range. This is particularly annoying as you could risk wasting time applying for something that doesn't meet your expectations.

The benefit ofexpertis that it only advertises jobs that pay over €60,000 per year. The downside is that it is a premium site that costs €11.90 per month. But if you're aiming for a salary of over €60,000 a year then stop being a tight ass and get out your credit card!

Since Experteer tends to be at the higher end of the market, there tends to be more job descriptions in English.

Others

Two others worth mentioning areAdviceAndZipRecruiter. While these don't make the top 10 based on monthly website traffic alone, they're both pretty big fish internationally. So definitely worth a look, especially if you're looking for a job with an international company.
