2. Insider tips for writing HR resumes
As a human resource specialist or generalist, you're used to the hiring process—screening resumes, interviewing new applicants, and conducting background checks.
What if you sent out resumes and got invited to interviews instead? Going through the application process for a Human Resources position is stressful as you are held to a higher standard than applicants for other positions.
Because you were previously responsible for the vetting and introduction process, hiring managers expect you to submit a well-written resume and cover letter.
You need a great HR resume to showcase your experience, skills, qualifications and achievements to impress the hiring manager. To help you get started, we've included a sample HR resume below, along with four insider tips on how to write it.
Create a meaningful HR resume summary or resume goal
With your previous experience in human resources, you know that hiring managers are busy and spend very little time reviewing resumes. You must start your HR resume with a well-written oneresume summaryorresume targetto draw the hiring manager's attention and distract from the pile of resumes he's reviewing.
Resume summaries are typically intended for candidates with prior experience. Make sure you highlight your relevant experience and career achievements in your staff resume summary,HR related skills, and any other qualifications you possess.
Here is an example of a well-written resume summary for a human resources generalist:

At Meadow Labs Inc, increased employee satisfaction rate by 35% and reduced recruitment and benefits costs by 15%. Can narrow the gap between workforce and senior management to create a cohesive and productive work environment. Possess a Professional in Human Resources certification.
However, if you're a recent college grad or an inexperienced worker writing an entry-level human resources resume, you should set a goal for your human resources resume.
Your resume objective should aim to highlight any relevant experience or education you have, your skills and your goal for the application (try to articulate your goal of helping the company achieve its goals).
Here is an example of a great HR resume goal for a college graduate:
Objective example of a college degree HR resume
Dedicated recent graduate with a BA in Human Resource Management. Detail-oriented student with a 3.8 GPA and a thesis in Organizational Psychology in the workforce. I would like to incorporate academic knowledge into common HR customs and practices in order to achieve the company's goals and to fill a position as a Human Resources Specialist at Johnson & Johnson.
Quantify your professional experience in human resources
Human resources departments plan, organize, coordinate and implement administrative functions in an organization. Human Resources is also responsible for the recruitment, selection, hiring, onboarding and training of new employees.
Because HR handles many of an organization's day-to-day administrative tasks, quantifying your work experience with hard numbers and percentages is essential if you want to impress the hiring manager.
Use hard numbers and percentages whenincluding your servicesgives the hiring manager a better understanding of your job performance and how you have contributed to your company.
Here are three bullet point examples of quantified HR work experience:
Bullet point #1
- Managed all HR related tasks for a medical company with 200+ employees including payroll, employee benefit program, documentation, interviewing, training and onboarding of new employees
Bullet point #2
- Invited by 20+ motivational speakers and industry experts to give speeches to employees about building trust and morale in the workplace
Bullet point #3
- Reduce the cost of benefits by 15% by negotiating better contracts with leading healthcare providers and ensuring benefits are not awarded to ineligible employees
Emphasize your education and HR-related certifications
Today, a bachelor's degree is fairly standard, and it's not uncommon for applicants to hold a master's degree or higher when applying for most jobs, including human resources positions.
If you only have a bachelor's degree - don't worry. Instead, try to highlight any HR-related study, course, or project you have completed to further show your competency and qualifications as an HR generalist or specialist.
Here are three examples of great HR-related education to include on your resume:
- Degree in Human Resources
- Personnel-related thesis
- Award for HR-related project (organizational behavior, psychology etc.)
Be sure to include your HR-related educational achievements in a bullet point under your degree or in your resume goal if you are an inexperienced candidate.
Finally, Human Resources certifications are another great way to show your competency as an HR generalist or specialist.
Here is a list of the three most popular and recognized human resources certifications:
- Professional in Human Resources (PHR)
- SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP)
- SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP)
In addition to your relevant work experience, HR certifications demonstrate and demonstrate your knowledge of industry best practices and regulations. Many companies are looking for HR candidates with at least a PHR, while many prefer they also have an SPHR certification.
If you have more than one HR certification, it's a good idea to create a dedicated certification section on your resume for HR. Otherwise, it's okay to include your certificate as a bullet point in your skills section.
