5G Coverage Map: Where you can get 5G on Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile | digital trends (2023)

Gone are the days when5Git was just a buzzword and the implementation was experimental. Today, 5G is a globally established network protocol embedded in most high-quality and flagship mobile devices. 5G stands for fifth generation mobile technology and is set to replace 4G (and older protocols) around the world with speeds up to 100 times faster. Not only is it faster, but it's also more responsive to general coverage and reception. That means faster uploading and downloading of documents, images, and videos. For home use, it means replacing fiber optic cable with fast wireless connections.

There are two forms of 5G technology currently in use:Sub-6 relies on lower frequencies to deliver a much bigger sound.red, but the trade-off is that it will receive only marginallyfaster speedsthan you would with 4G. While mmWave connections rely on much higher frequencies that provide much faster download speeds, those radio waves cannot physically travel long distances or pass through obstacles like walls or even windows, reducing signal strength.

Verizon offers fixed and mobile 5G throughout the US, although the 5G reach for this operator covers only 12.7% of the country. After years of focusing exclusively on mmWave (which it calls UWB, or Ultra Wide Band), and only covering a very small portion of the country,Verizonit eventually turned on its national 5G network using Sub-6 spectrum. While it is available in many more places than mmWave, it still has a limited reach across the country and is only available in densely populated areas. At least you can expect good speeds whendohowever, get it.

Verizon 5G Ultra Wideband began rolling out on April 3, 2019 and is now available in multiple locations within 1,700 cities. Due to limits on range and obstacle management, mmWave is inherently more difficult to represent with an online map. So just because you see mmWave on a coverage map, walking 25 feet could put you out of range of the cell tower. The good news is that Verizon 5G works well where it is available, with speeds above 2 Gbps.

If youIn factworry about mmWaveroof, mmWave from Verizonredis the most widespread and is already available in dozens of cities, although, again, you will only be able to set a5G connectioninpartsof those cities, which means that access to 5G is still limited.Verizon is also offering 5G broadband Internet, known as 5G Home Internet, in more than 900 cities as of October 1, 2018.

AT&T 5G network coverage

AT&T tiene unwidespread 5G network, with 29% national coverage, but unsurprisingly, the type of 5G connectivity you get depends on where you live. AT&T is the only carrier with 5G in all 50 states, but its speeds aren't anything to write home about.

AT&T's wireless coverage relies heavily on Sub-6 for its national network. Depending on your city, your Sub-6 5G may have the same or slower speeds than 4G because AT&T doesn't have enough spectrum to deploy both networks together. In some cities, the carrier offers mmWave (5G+, as AT&T calls it) with ultra-fast speeds, but that kind of 5G service is still limited to a few streets in some major cities. He has a long way to go.

It is important to note that AT&TIn factwants you to think you're always on 5G. If you don't have a 5G capable phone you may still get a little icon saying it's on "5GE" but that'snot really 5G at all– it's just AT&T's new brand name for 4G. Only when you see "5G" or "5G+" in your status bar are you taking advantage ofreal5G service.

T-Mobile was the first carrierto deploy a nationwide 5G network, however, that network also relies heavily on Sub-6 spectrum, so it's not as fast as the mmWave networks some expect when they hear the term "5G" or see 5G commercials. operator television. T-Mobile's strategy focuses on building Sub-6 5G on the exact same towers that currently carry 4G, so their network footprint is almost the same for both. T-Mobile ranks first with 53.79% national coverage. Its 5G signals reach more than 9,000 ZIP codes in more than 3,000 cities, according to WhistleOut, the telecom research and analysis company.

T-Mobile also launched mmWave in select city centers following its merger with Sprint. Like all other providers, T-Mobile will eventually use the mmWave spectrum in as many cities as possible as part of its multi-tiered network to address the needs of different population densities. Unlike other carriers, it doesn't show you a different status bar icon when you're on mmWave - your phone just seamlessly switches between mmWave and Sub-6, and you get the best possible speeds at that time.

One thing that 5G hasn't fixed is general coverage. In dense areas, T-Mobile's 5G network works well, but its overall coverage map still lags behind Verizon and AT&T. There are places across the country where T-Mobile and Sprint customers just don't getanycoverage, though now T-Mobile can go head-to-head with Verizon and AT&T when it comes to 5G coverage.

While 5G is primarily associated with phones and tablets,Internet in the home is another area where 5G has a growing presence.. Most Internet service providers use cable, coaxial, or fiber optic delivery systems, but 5G wireless Internet service transmits a signal directly to the home. This means that you get the same mobile data that you would on a phone to use as a home network with a router. T-Mobile and Verizon offer 5G home internet, though it's still not quite up to speed in terms of availability, speed, and latency compared to fiber or cable.
